Hannah was barren and tormented by the fact. Years went by. In desperation, she went to the tabernacle at Shiloh to pray. She was so sorrowful that Eli the priest accused her of being drunken. But she defended herself, and Eli blessed her. She promised God that if He would give her a son, she would consecrate him to the ministry for life. Soon, God gave her a son. Take your sorrows to God in prayer.
1 Samuel 1:20 - "...[she] called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD. ...For this child I prayed."
PRINCIPALS - "Samuel and the Kings"
1 & 2 Samuel and 1 & 2 Kings contain historical tales of Israel from the time of Eli the High Priest, through the great prophet Samuel, King Saul, King David to King Solomon. One man, Samuel played a central, preponderant role in Israel for forty years. He anointed King Saul, who ruled forty years, and King David, who also ruled forty years. Many of the richest texts in the Bible are contained here; awe-inspiring stories of how God worked through three generations. A must-read.
1 Samuel 3:4 - "...the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I."
PRINCIPLES - "The Lord Had Shut Up Her Womb"
It is a hard saying, but sometimes barrenness is of the Lord. Elkanah had two wives. Peninnah had many children. Hannah had none. Peninnah tormented Hannah about her barrenness, but it drove her to her knees in desperate prayer. God eventually gave her a son named Samuel, but she gave him back to the Lord. Samuel grew up in the tabernacle, away from his mother, and became one of the greatest men of God of all times.
1 Samuel 1:6 - "...her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb."
PROPHECIES - "Bloodline of Redeemers"
Jesus came from a bloodline of redeemers and redeemed, like Judah, who redeemed Joseph from murderous brothers. He descended from Tamar, who was redeemed from playing the harlot. He descended from Rahab the harlot, redeemed to give birth to Boaz, kinsman redeemer for Ruth and Naomi. Women of Bethlehem prophesied to Naomi that Boaz and Ruth's son, Obed, would be famous. He was! Grandfather of King David and Jesus the Redeemer!
Ruth 4:14 - "...the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the LORD, which hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel."
Leave Foolishness Behind
Evil pursueth sinners: but to the righteous good shall be repayed. – Proverbs 13:21
Satan has had us in a poverty mentality so long that it's tough for us to grasp just how intensely God really does desire to prosper us—even though He's demonstrated that desire again and again. Take Abraham, for example. God made him an extremely wealthy man. Genesis 13:2 says he was rich in cattle, in silver and in gold. Then, of course, there was Solomon. The Bible says he surpassed all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom. God's servant Job possessed such great wealth that he was called the greatest of all the men of the East. That was before Satan put him through the wringer. Afterward, God blessed him with more than twice what Satan had stolen. The problem is, just the thought of the kind of wealth God gave to those men scares most believers today. They're afraid it would destroy them. God has said that "the prosperity of fools shall destroy them" (Proverbs 1:32). But that doesn't mean you should avoid being prosperous. It means you should avoid being a fool! I challenge you, this week, to go to the book of Proverbs and find out for yourself what God says about the characteristics of a fool. Let the Holy Spirit search your heart. If you see ways in which you've been a fool, repent and make a firm decision not to be caught in that trap again. Let the Word of God inspire you to leave foolishness behind and stir within you the faith to reach out and receive what you, as a redeemed child of the living God, have a divine right to—not the curse of poverty, but the blessing of prosperity! No matter how bad your body feels, the Word will always say, "By His stripes you were healed" (1 Peter 2:24). No matter how bad your bank book looks, the Word will always say, "My God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19). Don't settle for the meager existence the world says you can have. Lay hold of what the Word says you can have. Center your attention on the eternal truths of God and look not to the things which are seen. After all, they're subject to change!
